Ayden’s room came a little later than the smaller kids. Mostly because we couldn’t agree on anything and though I’m sure I wanted a huge Nike tick wallpaper at one stage in my life there was no way I was using it in his room. So we (I) completely changed the direction we were both going and designed something around what was practical, easy for him to keep clean and inviting. All the links to things are below.
Firstly our arguments started with the double bed. I personally didn’t want him to get one. I didn’t think he needed one and it just took up more of the room. I managed to find a bed from Snooze. Its a king single bed with a draw at the end for shoes and everything else he seems to find. This bed was the what I was thinking when I thought of pre teen age.
Wallpaper was made by Milton & King Australia – As per usual in my house we love the feature wallpaper! His room was all about light, clean and crisp. Mostly because you can really add anything and change it up and it’ll always look good. This is proper wallpaper. It was easy for us to apply we just brought a good adhesive glue and it was done within a couple of hours. Plus its forgiving for all the little bumps I forgot to get out (shhhh.) Anything goes with it!
I used another Alisa & Lysandra rug. The rug isn’t one that requires a lot of upkeep. It doesn’t shed and the colours of blue throughout it really give the room a feel of calm and comfort. One of our biggest thing is storage. They need places to put their things – even if its hidden! I used shelves from Bunnings and locker cabinets from Kmart. He is able to put all his bits and pieces in the locker and put the things he loves on show.
His desk is only a small one from Ikea with the chair. It fits perfectly in the space. He has had this one for a while so we just kept it. I used clipboards from office works to hang up a calendar and his things to do list. Ayden likes knowing what is due when and what needs to be done. It also gives him a little push to take responsibility for things. So if he can see he has football training on Tuesdays and Fridays he know to get his things ready before school.
A bean bag was definitely a must in his room. He has friends over and they “hang” in there sometimes so added seating is a must. Not to mention Ayden plays his iPad in there and reads sometimes. We got one from Agnes avenue this one was filled with two bags of beans from Kmart and its the most comfortable bean bag. Its soft and just stunning.
Bedding was purchased from Grazie & May. Its soft and really complimented the bed. The cushions were from Linen house and the sheets are Canningvale. The white Pom Pom knitted blanket was from Munchkin and Bear.
With styling the room the one thing that i needed to buy because I HAD TO HAVE IT was this denim flag from Kawaiian Lion “War is dumb” it really set everything together for me. It was perfect for the space and the area we had. We used some of his older things in the room like the world globe, books, lamp and trophies. I brought him a cactus plant from Bunnings because apparently they’re hard to kill – we’ll see. But I did read somewhere that having a live plant in a room can reduce stress and boost your mood. The clock is from clockwise. He has a hand drawn piece of art from his cousin Jordan who drew this for him years ago since then he has started his own business in drawing and selling these – The Art of Jordan Morpeth. The painted art of Ivie and him was done by Love Stax and the “Ayden” print was from Olive Et Oriel.
Ayden and myself are super happy how this turned out. Everything I wanted really came together. Of course we still argue about the TV in his room – which I’m against at the moment. But we have created a space he is proud of and spends a lot of time in. I found his age harder than the younger kids to style for. He is at the age where he knows what he wants and he isn’t old enough for somethings but is too young for a lot of other things.
